One of the often heard remarks in golf is that your golf swing is slow when you walk slowly, or simultaneously you may also talk slowly. Now, why would walking slowly relate to slow-talking? Well, it possibly is your personality that does not allow you to make a fast swing and make the distance. Argue what is a fast swing, but however, look at the current number one golfer in the World Rankings; Dustin Johnson. Justin walks slowly,  he looks laid back, he talks slow and deliberate. Interestingly, Dustin’s tempo was about 29/10 a couple of years ago. Check the lingo on this in the note at the bottom of the page. But it is much faster now. So despite his personality, he changed his swing tempo. Are we talking about one of the myths in golf here? Also, let us get rid of some myths in golf here.

How did he do it?

You may find yourself not the champion golfer, but DJ managed to speed up his tempo to 22/8 (twenty-two eight). He turns the club WAY past parallel (on a driver) in 21 to 22 frames of standard video. Then back to impact in 8 more frames. So, takeaway to impact is one second. And did I mention he goes past parallel? The past parallel thing is important because speed is a function of time and distance. He has the same frame count as Tiger (in his prime) or Rory McIlroy. But he goes further back than they did or do. So, that makes him faster. Therefore, Johnson’s personality was not a concern. In fact, he changed the tempo of his swing. Similarly, any golfer can alter his. You are not stuck with it!. Train it like training anything else in life. Use the right system to do it, and put in some hours.

Get the right System

It is called Tour Tempo, and amazingly put in a couple of minutes and improve. However, to make the changes long-lasting you need to put those minutes in daily (or at least weekly). Match your tempo to that of the PGA Tour Pros with the internationally acclaimed Tour Tempo Tones. It is the way to instantly improve your golf swing.

A final word

This pretty cool video comparison between DJ and John Novosel Jr. of Tour Tempo is created with the TT Frame Counter App. The Tour Tempo Frame Counter App is the easiest and quickest way to make a tempo and swing comparison. It allows you to view and count sport action video, specifically the golf swing, by advancing the video one frame at a time. So, measure tempo by using the Frame Counter App, and analyse Dustin Johnson’s swing tempo. Similarly, you can count your number of frames going back, and down to impact. In other words, You are MEASURING your tempo, allowing me to compare it to DJ and voila, I am looking good. Therefore, we have got rid of this myth in golf.

Note: Swing Tempo in golf is the elapsed time of the backswing, and back down to impact. Express this elapsed time as the ratio of frames of standard video recorded. So 29/10, originally recorded for Dustin johnson’s old swing meant 29 frames backswing, and 10 frames downswing. The ideal ratio is a three to one ratio. Moreover, all of the top golfers display this ratio when shooting lower scores.
